Well, we had an eventful weekend! Friday night was my sister's wedding reception, which was super fun! We stayed wayyyyyy to late, but Maddy was dancing and didn't want to leave!
Saturday morning we got up for basketball, which was apparently canceled, hit a few garage sales (found 2 tricycles for $11!), and headed to IKEA. After shopping at IKEA for a while, we left to go to my cousin Jessie's graduation open house. We avoided the highway (it was down to 1 lane, GPS said it would take 53 minutes to go 19 miles on the highway!), and took a back way. After about 10-15 minutes on this road, we hit traffic. It was stop and go for quite a while. The guy behind us was obviously not paying very close attention, and at one point locked up his brakes to avoid hitting us. A few minutes later we were stopping again and the guy was apparently not looking. He smashed right into the back of us, without even touching his brakes. Joe took his foot off the brake when he saw him coming, so we were moving *a little* when we got hit. Joe estimates that the guy was going 25-ish or faster.
Maddy was in the middle row of the van, behind me. She was asleep in her rear-facing car seat. She woke up when we got hit (the sound of the glass exploding was VERY loud), but didn't cry or anything. We pulled over immediately and both jumped out to check on her. She was completely unharmed. Thankfully the glass didn't reach quite that far forward, and because she was rear-facing she didn't really feel the impact of the hit. The rest of the time at the scene is a bit of a blur. I called my parents, and they came from the open house with Tara and Matt. The police arrived and eventually called the paramedics to check me out, since we were all concerned about the baby. The paramedics checked me out and said that I looked good, but they had no way to know about the baby. The worry in an accident like that is that your placenta will abrupt (detach), and it's not always something that has outward symptoms. They cleared me to head home and go to Sparrow, so Joe and I headed home to get checked out and Maddy headed off with my family. Tara and Matt took her to the party, which she loved.
When we finally got to the hospital, they took me right back and hooked me up to the monitors. They started an IV, which was not much fun and took two attempts, and told me I'd have to be there for at least 4 hours. While we were there we got a visit from our friends Scott and Colleen, who welcomed their baby boy into the world on Thursday. It was 6+ hours and three bags of fluids before I was finally released (at 1:30 a.m.). Thankfully everything looks good with this peanut, and she's moving and dancing around in there like usual!
We recently switched insurance from State Farm to Progressive, so we weren't sure how our claim experience was going to be. So far (*knock on wood*) it's gone very smoothly. Joe called yesterday to open a claim. He gave them the info we had and they passed it on to a representative. She called today and got the ball rolling. We were given 3 choices of repair shops, Joe chose Shaheen's because it was closest. They'll have Enterprise there to take him to get our rental car. I'm curious to see how much the damage will be. Joe's guessing $5,000+. We shall see!
All in all it hasn't been too terribly awful. We're very lucky that the accident wasn't worse, and we're very lucky that we're all ok! Our van is just a "thing," and is replaceable/repairable. Our sweet babies are not!
